Curvature and Smooth Topology in Dimension Four

چکیده

Seiberg-Witten theory leads to a delicate interplay between Riemannian geometry and smooth topology in dimension four. In particular, the scalar curvature of any metric must satisfy certain non-trivial estimates if the manifold in question has a non-trivial Seiberg-Witten invariant. However, it has recently been discovered [20, 22] that similar statements also apply to other parts of the curvature tensor. This article presents the most salient aspects of these curvature estimates in a self-contained manner, and shows how they can be applied to the theory of Einstein manifolds. We then probe the issue of whether the known estimates are optimal by relating this question to a certain conjecture in Kähler geometry. ∗Supported in part by NSF grant DMS-9802722.

ACTION OF SEMISIMPLE ISOMERY GROUPS ON SOME RIEMANNIAN MANIFOLDS OF NONPOSITIVE CURVATURE

A manifold with a smooth action of a Lie group G is called G-manifold. In this paper we consider a complete Riemannian manifold M with the action of a closed and connected Lie subgroup G of the isometries. The dimension of the orbit space is called the cohomogeneity of the action. Manifolds having actions of cohomogeneity zero are called homogeneous. A classic theorem about Riemannian manifolds...

Entropy and a Convergence Theorem for Gauss Curvature Flow in High Dimension

In this paper we prove uniform regularity estimates for the normalized Gauss curvature flow in higher dimensions. The convergence of solutions in C∞-topology to a smooth strictly convex soliton as t approaches to infinity is obtained as a consequence of these estimates together with an earlier result of Andrews. The estimates are established via the study of an entropy functional for convex bod...

Phase structure of intrinsic curvature models on dynamically triangulated disk with fixed boundary length

A first-order phase transition is found in two types of intrinsic curvature models defined on dynamically triangulated surfaces of disk topology. The intrinsic curvature energy is included in the Hamiltonian. The smooth phase is separated from a non-smooth phase by the transition. The crumpled phase, which is different from the non-smooth phase, also appears at sufficiently small curvature coef...

Computational Topology for Approximations of Knots

The preservation of ambient isotopic equivalence under piecewise linear (PL) approximation for smooth knots are prominent in molecular modeling and simulation. Sufficient conditions are given regarding: (1) Hausdorff distance, and (2) a sum of total curvature and derivative. High degree Bézier curves are often used as smooth representations, where computational efficiency is a practical concern...
